Professional bio
Richard joined TEQ as Group Executive Events in March 2024, leading TEQ’s Major, Destination and Business Events programs.
Richard brings more than 20 years’ experience in professional sport, major events and business events with roles that cross the spectrum of entrepreneurial, commercial and the public sector. Richard was previously CEO of the New Zealand Breakers in the National Basketball League, leading the club for 13 seasons through it’s initial entry into the league through and departing the club following four championship successes in five seasons.
In 2016 the NBL engaged Richard with the task of relaunching the Brisbane Bullets following almost a decade out of the league.
Richard returned to New Zealand in early 2020 to take up the role of Head of Major Events with Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED), a role which expanded in 2021 to Head of Major and Business Events, including leadership of the Auckland Convention Bureau. With ATEED growing into Auckland Unlimited, Richard took up the role of Director of Arts, Entertainment and Events, including the Major and Business Events portfolios and adding management of the Auckland Live performing arts venues and content programs. During his time at ATEED and Auckland Unlimited Richard also sat on the Local Organising Committee Board for the Women’s Rugby World Cup played in 2022 and headed up Auckland’s Host City Program for delivery of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
During his time at TEQ Richard has led the review of both the Major Events strategy and the Queensland Destination Events Program, and the implementation of the Queensland Business Events Industry Strategy.
